Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Athletes Ranked (“the Service”), operated at athletesranked.com, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the Service.

2. Description of Service

Athletes Ranked publishes cross-sport rankings produced entirely by fan voting. They are a measure of what the people who vote here prefer — not a performance model, not a prediction, and not a claim to be definitive. What the numbers do and do not mean is set out in full on the methodology page. The Service is provided “as is” and we reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time.

3. User Accounts

Voting never requires an account. Some optional features — your personal ballot, following athletes — do. Sign-in is by a link emailed to you and there is no password, so what you are responsible for is access to your inbox and for activity under your account.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Service
• Interfere with or disrupt the Service or its infrastructure
• Upload malicious code or content
• Impersonate any person or entity
• Scrape, crawl, or spider the Service without written permission
• Use the Service to send spam or unsolicited communications

5. Intellectual Property

The site itself — its software, design, logos and original writing — belongs to Athletes Ranked. Much of what you see on it does not, and we make no claim to it: athlete photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and biographies from Wikipedia, under their own licences, which are named per image on the credits page along with their authors and sources. Those remain the property of their creators and are reusable under their own terms, not ours. Athlete names and likenesses belong to the athletes.

6. User Content

If you submit content to the Service, you retain ownership of your content but grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, and display it in connection with operating the Service. You represent that you have the right to submit such content and that it does not violate any third party rights.

7. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Athletes Ranked shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

9. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your account and access to the Service at our sole discretion, without notice, for conduct that we determine violates these Terms or is harmful to other users, us, or third parties. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms shall be resolved in the courts of Ontario.

11. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be posted here with a new “last updated” date; there is no mailing list, and this site does not send unsolicited email. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
